How To Apply For Ration Card Online

Getting a Ration Card in Karnataka has become little easier now. Thanks to The Department of Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, you can now apply for a Ration Card Online! That's a good news. Isn't it?

I had read the news long back. But Today I tried it. They have a decent interface and don't ask for too much information.

Here's how you do it:
  1. Head to the website of  The Department of Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, Government of Karnataka (http://ahara.kar.nic.in/)
    2. Apply For Ration Card Online
  2. Click on the scrolling link with text Click here to apply for Ration Card - New or Using Surrender Certificate.  Click on the above image to see where to click.
  3. Step 2 above opens a new window with a form. Choose your language (English/Kannada) to proceed.
  4. Subsequent  requires you to fill in information about your full address, Ward number etc.
  5. You will need to enter the R R Number. You can get it from your later electricity bill.
  6. If you already have a ration card and want to split it, you will have to give the Ration Card number of the existing card.
  7. Keep clicking on the 'next' button after filling every page, and submit at the end.
  8. If you have filled all mandatory fields with valid data, the system will accept your application and generate a receipt.
  9. Print this receipt. You will need it for future despondence, especially, your receipt number and Receipt Date.
Once you have submitted the application here, you can check the status of your online application by going to http://web1.kar.nic.in/fcslpg1/

I did this immediately after submitting and got the following response:
Your application no. 1234969 dated on 12/13/2011 2:22:00 PM has been received by the dept. Please wait for Food Inspector's visit plan.
So, I'm waiting for Food Inspector's visit!

If you don't have a ration card, go apply now and share your experience.

    i applied for it on Nov 11th and still waiting for the inspector's visit. Has he visited you?

      Hello,
      As stated in the post, I had applied on 13th December. I finally got a reply(sms) from them on May 3rd!

      The reply is something like this
      "Your RC application no. 1000969 dated on 13/12/2011 is approved for Biometric & Photography. Refer department web site or visit a nearest FPS to find and visit an authoroized Photo Bio Service Center to upload your family members biometric and photographs online. You have to submit your security code to the Photo Bio Service Center which is given to you through SMS."

      Looks like there'll not be any visits from officer.

    You can find the location code in your electricity bill.

    You have done a wonderful job helping others but Has the Food Inspector visited you as on date.
    Or you have to visit his office and start the same old story of Anna Hazare song.You know what I mean.Because I am also waiting for the past one month.

      I was wrong, or the process has changed.
      Looks like no food inspector will visit now.
      According to an SMS I got from them, I have to find and visit the nearest "authoroized Photo Bio Service Center"

      Let's see how to go from here!

      As far as I know No body is going to visit you at your house from the Food office. you should go to the Food office with the acknowledgement, then they will SMS you a code, which is needed to upload your photo and thumbimpression. This upload of personal data will be done at franchise locations listed on the Ahara website.

      I got an SMS recently telling me to visit nearest " authoroized Photo Bio Service Center".
      So, nobody is going to visit.

    while clicking the link for new ration card,it shows service is temporarily unavilable why?

      That's true. Unfortunately, they have taken down the service (hopefully) temporarily.
